The Floor Is Lava… Well, Mind Maps

Sri Emas Year 11 Economics students turns the school floor into one giant revision map!

After months of past papers, Year 11 Economics students at Sri Emas needed a fresh way to revise before their IGCSEs. Teacher Crystal Lim got them off their chairs and onto the floor.

Starting from the first mind map of the syllabus, colour-coded teams raced to connect every topic, graph and formula they had learned since Year 9, writing straight onto the floor with whiteboard markers. The goal was to see the subject as one connected whole, so students know which ideas to draw on when answering exam questions. Teacher Crystal kept the red marker for herself, stepping in only to correct or fill gaps, and every red mark cost a team points.

The room buzzed as students checked each other’s work and recalled forgotten topics. In under an hour, they had revised the whole syllabus and knew exactly what still needed attention.

The activity reflects the Memory principle of Hacking Education: memorable experiences lead to long-term retention. Pairing movement with recall helps information stick, while the teacher steps back to facilitate as students take ownership of their own revision.
